About The Jiu-Jitsu Institute

The Jiu-Jitsu Institute has served Wilmington, North Carolina since May 2018, founded by Gil Alcocer, who began martial arts at seven, served in the Air Force, took up jiu-jitsu at 23 and trained under the Mendes brothers. It is a family-first academy built on six stated values — cleanliness, camaraderie, engagement, high-level technique, patience and safety — that keeps multiple coaches on the mat at once for more personalised instruction and structures classes around short, varied, interactive activities. Students are pitched anti-bullying skills, mental clarity and discipline alongside the jiu-jitsu itself.
