About Portland Boxing Club
The Portland Boxing Club is a 501(c)(3) non-profit amateur boxing gym in Portland, Maine, operating under USA Boxing and led by president and head coach Bob Russo. It is open to competitors and non-competitors of either sex, with a preferred minimum age of 10-12, and every member starts on a no-contact beginner workout until the coaches judge them ready for light contact; boxers preparing for a bout are the coaches' first priority. The gym has an 18x18 ring, heavy, speed, double-end and uppercut bags, a weight room and treadmills, and runs a Saturday morning walk-in circuit class and a Friday strength and conditioning class that are open to the public. The club notes that most of its athletes come from underprivileged backgrounds and need financial assistance to register.
