About The Academy
The Academy is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, MMA and Muay Thai gym at 18 Ashmont Street in Portland, Maine, opened in 2003 by husband-and-wife owners Jay Jack and Amanda 'Mandy' Buckner, both black belts under Amal Easton and both former professional fighters. Training runs seven days a week and includes gi and no-gi BJJ at basic, all-levels and advanced (blue belt and up) tiers, coach-directed live training sessions, MMA and Muay Thai classes at basic and intermediate levels, daily self-directed open practice, and a Friday open mat with study hall and curriculum sign-offs. New students enter through an On Ramp programme, and the same curriculum is published online as FunctionalBJJ.com, a self-defence-first syllabus of more than 200 techniques.
