About Discovery Martial Arts
Discovery Martial Arts at 34 Rainmaker Drive in Portland, Maine teaches Hakken Budo Ninjutsu — striking, joint locks, throwing, groundfighting and weapons for self-defense, for ages 13 and up. It operates under founder Hanshi John Poliquin, a personal student of To-Shin Do founder Stephen K. Hayes and Ninjutsu Grandmaster Masaaki Hatsumi since the early 1980s, who holds a 10th-degree black belt in Budo Taijutsu and directs the international Discovery Martial Arts Association. The dojo is co-owned by Shihan Mark White, a 5th-degree black belt training since 2001, and Zach, a third-degree black belt; it opens Monday and Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings, and charges $129 a month or $1,250 a year with no contract.
