About IRONGRIP Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
IRONGRIP Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was founded in downtown Raleigh, NC in 2020 by Glayton Melo, a world champion and 3rd degree black belt with over 24 years under the Nova Uniao banner. Melo began training in 2000 at Nova Uniao in Pernambuco, Brazil and served as a SWAT officer with the Pernambuco Police Force's CHOQUE unit before moving to the US, which shaped a philosophy that technique must work outside the academy as well as in it; he teaches effective transitions, fluid sweeps and quick submissions with an emphasis on butterfly guard, x-guard, back control, chokes and arm locks. The academy is an IBJJF registered school running adult and kids gi and no-gi classes with an open mat and supervised rolling in 5-7 minute rounds, and makes a point that beginners train with the head instructor from day one rather than with assistants.
