About American Jiu Jitsu of Maplewood
American Jiu Jitsu of Maplewood is a family-run dojo in Maplewood, New Jersey and a club of the American Jiu Jitsu Federation, teaching the scenario-based self-defense system founded by O'Sensei Joe Puleio. Classes run in three streams — kids (3rd-5th graders, self-defense and anti-bullying), teens and young adults, and adults — on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturday mornings, and the school explicitly does not encourage a competitive environment. It is owned by head instructor Shihan Tony Avila, a fifth-degree black belt who has trained students since 1994 and taught law enforcement officers and Department of Homeland Security field agents, alongside co-owner Sensei Dara Avila; Sensei Ed Tall also runs women's intro courses and self-defense seminars, and Sifu Rick Little teaches tai chi basics.
