Black Lion Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Byron Center serves the greater Grand Rapids area as part of Team Kroyler Gracie. Head instructor Chad Pomeroy, a retired Army Iraq war veteran who began training in 2006, is one of only six certified black belts under Kroyler Gracie, a grandson of Hélio Gracie. The academy runs adult gi and no-gi jiu-jitsu from age 16, kids classes as Cubs (4-6) and Kids (7-12) with a young adults band at 12-14, striking under Cali Striking System owner Duncan Duffin, a Saturday jiu-jitsu/MMA competition class, and open gym sessions on Fridays and Sundays.
