About Rising Tide Academy (Finksburg)
Rising Tide Academy's Finksburg location is one of three Maryland academies (with Columbia and Timonium) teaching Relson Gracie-style Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai. Its jiu-jitsu is deliberately self-defense-first rather than sport-only, covering stand-up as well as ground work, and Grandmaster Relson Gracie himself visits the Finksburg and Columbia academies, alongside seminars with Gracie family members and UFC fighters. The academy was started in 2010 by brothers Mike and Jordan Stewart, who own and run it — Mike earned his black belt in 2019 after a decade of BJJ and a lifetime in martial arts, Jordan began under Relson Gracie in 2010 and was promoted in 2020 and runs the Finksburg kids competition team. Mike Johnson, a black belt under Professor Pedro Sauer with over 20 years in the art and a 25-year police career, teaches the Finksburg adult classes on Tuesday and Thursday nights. Classes run morning, afternoon and evening, gi and no-gi, beginner through competition, with parents and children able to train at the same time.
