About Sapateiro Jiu-Jitsu Academy
Sapateiro Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Honolulu, Hawaii, near downtown and the Kakaako, Nuuanu, Liliha and Makiki neighbourhoods, teaches Brazilian jiu-jitsu in gi and no-gi with a beginner-friendly policy — a gi is recommended but not required to start, and there is no mandatory uniform requirement. Its instructors are unusually senior: founder Kyle Takao, a 3rd-degree black belt under Leandro Nyza with 20+ years across MMA, BJJ and judo, an IBJJF No-Gi Worlds silver medallist in 2012 and 2014 and a Shooto A-class veteran; Seth McKinney, a 3rd-degree black belt under Renato 'Charuto' Verissimo and one of the state's leading no-gi coaches; Daniel Shelverton, a black belt in both judo and Brazilian jiu-jitsu with a boxing and wrestling background; and Edmund, a 3rd-degree black belt in the Oswaldo Fadda lineage running back through Luis Franca to Mitsuyo Maeda.
