About Nibukikan Martial Arts Academy
Nibukikan Martial Arts Academy is a non-profit school at 664 East 1st Avenue in Chico, California that has been active in the community for over half a century, teaching Danzan Ryu jujitsu and judo alongside yoga and tai chi. Its jujitsu and judo senseis are certified by the American Judo and Jujitsu Federation and most volunteer their time; the school says it aims to "train teachers, not fighters", working through partner drills, randori, kata and technique variations. The senior instructor is Professor Harry Burleson, a 6th-degree black belt with 46 years in jujitsu, 15 in judo and 33 years teaching, and the roster runs to ten senseis including a 2023 Sport Jujitsu World Champion and a tai chi teacher who has taught since 1977.
