About Checkmat Knoxville Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy
Checkmat Knoxville is the Knoxville, Tennessee academy of the Checkmat organisation founded in 2008 by Leo Vieira, opened by owner and head instructor Professor Kevin James 'KJ' Gonzalez, a third-degree black belt, multiple-time world champion and No-Gi Absolute World Champion with over 20 years on the mats. The academy runs the Checkmat curriculum across Pee Wee BJJ (ages 3-7), Kids BJJ (8-14), Teen/Adult BJJ (15+) and Masters BJJ (50+), with gi and no-gi classes Monday to Friday morning and evening, a Muay Thai class added on Saturday mornings and a Sunday gi and no-gi open mat. Alongside the mat programme it offers women's self-defence and bully-prevention workshops and law-enforcement control tactics, which Professor Gonzalez teaches as a licensed CCW protective agent.
