About Ohio Academy of Jiu Jitsu
Ohio Academy of Jiu Jitsu in Heath, OH is an affiliate school of black belt Jason Matherley and part of the Team Shawn Hammonds association, running kids classes split into three age and experience groups under SafeSport certified instructors, adult classes six days a week from fundamentals through advanced competition training, a women's only programme, and an Integrated Combat Systems class blending boxing, Muay Thai and MMA taught by instructors with law enforcement, military and SWAT backgrounds. Owner and head instructor Derek Myers began training in 2010 under Jason Matherley and earned his black belt in 2025 from Professors Matherley and Shawn Hammonds; he was the #1 IBJJF Master 4 Medium-Heavy brown belt and took silver at the 2025 IBJJF European Championship and bronze at the 2024 Master Worlds and Pan Ams. The academy is a We Defy Foundation affiliate and an approved Adopt-A-Cop facility, with special membership rates for veterans, active military and first responders.
