About 1-Up Brazilian Jiu Jitsu - Cleveland
1-Up Jiu Jitsu is one of the longest-running BJJ schools on Cleveland's west side, founded in November 2012 by Paul Bartholet and training out of Old School Iron Gym in Brook Park as part of Team Chard West. It teaches sport BJJ, submission grappling and self-defense in both gi and no-gi, with morning classes, adult basics and advanced classes, kids BJJ from age 6, and a Friday open mat. Bartholet is a 3rd-degree black belt promoted by Chris Chard — Chard's first black belt, and at the time the youngest Clevelander to hold the rank — and he teaches alongside 1st-degree black belt Jon Bobel, who has been on the mat with him since 2016. The school pitches its rates as deliberately below market, and the first class is free.
