About The Academy of Self-Defense
The Academy of Self-Defense teaches jiu-jitsu and self-defense across three Ohio locations — Akron (1220 E Tallmadge Ave), Twinsburg and Mayfield Heights. Its core system is Minna-Jiu-Jitsu, a street-self-defense blend of karate, jiu-jitsu, savate, floor fighting and Thai boxing founded more than sixty years ago by the late Grand Master Frank F. Kovacs, 10th dan; alongside it the academy runs Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, Aiki-JuJutsu (Akron only), Kung Fu and T'ai Chi Ch'uan/Qigong (both Twinsburg), kids' and teens' classes and a competition team. Its class names distinguish two parallel jiu-jitsu curricula, MJJ (Machado) and GJJ (Gracie), and it lists a staff of nearly thirty instructors across the three sites.
