About Groundswell MMA
Groundswell MMA in Frederick was founded as The Fort MMA in 2013 and rebranded in 2022 when Zach Davis — a former professional MMA fighter and competitor on season 13 of The Ultimate Fighter — took ownership with his wife Courtney. It teaches gi and no-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at all levels alongside a striking ladder that runs from Striking Essentials through MMA Striking to an invite-only Advanced MMA Striking sparring class, plus fitness kickboxing and youth wrestling. Youth train as Little Dragons (4-6), Little Ninjas (7-9) and Young Samurai (10-12), with a separate teens programme for 13-16 year-olds. Unusually, the academy also runs two adaptive adult classes for people with developmental disabilities — a small sensory-sensitive group incorporating vestibular and auditory regulation, and a larger activities-based class. It won "Best of Frederick: Best Martial Arts School" in 2021 and 2023.
