About Unity Martial Arts

Unity Martial Arts is a 9,000-square-foot Little Rock academy that combines four schools under one roof: Cuong Nhu karate, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Wu-style Tai Chi and Iyengar yoga, with a Kendo programme added. It was founded in 2003 by Tanner Critz in Atlanta and moved to Arkansas in 2008; the building was bought and remodelled by its own students. Jiu-jitsu runs as Grasshoppers (4-7, a combined karate and BJJ curriculum), kids 8-12, adult and teen gi and no-gi, a Saturday judo class, a Saturday women's-only class and a Saturday open mat. Head jiu-jitsu instructor Matt Smith is a third-degree BJJ black belt (2014) and judo black belt (2023) who began at the Marine Corps Martial Arts Instructor Course; the school is an affiliate gym of the We Defy Foundation, which serves combat veterans, and takes students from age four into their nineties.
