About Rocket City Martial Arts
Rocket City Martial Arts has taught in Madison, Alabama since 2014 and trains a single style, Gyokushin Ryu Aikijujitsu - an aikido-based Japanese art founded by Grandmaster Terumi Washizu out of the Yoseikan honbu dojo in Shizuoka, which draws on judo, Japanese jujutsu and karate and specialises in sutemi (sacrifice) throws. The curriculum covers strikes, throws, falling and rolling, joint manipulations, ground fighting, sword and staff work and weapon disarmament, with techniques adapted to each student's size, fitness and physical limitations. Owner and head instructor Matt Gilliard Sensei is a 6th-degree black belt (Rokudan, 2024) who has trained with Grandmaster Washizu at the Shizuoka honbu dojo, and the school takes children from age five with an optional leadership programme.
